    one of my favourite childhood memories is dad taking me to this small bookshop in my hometown. one day he bought me two books of 'seek & find: bible stories' (one about old testament stories, the other about new testament). it's basically a 'where's waldo?'-kind of book, only more religious. in 'seek & find: bible stories', we follow mini mike's adventure throughout the pages of 28 bible stories. he meddles everywhere, from the beautifully illustrated noah's ark to the david and goliath's infamous dispute, from the parting of the red sea to the joyous manna-eating party in the desert.

    i got my first copy of harry potter and the philosopher's stone from the same bookshop. it was idul adha 1999, i remember i was sitting calmly at passenger seat by myself, in my uncle's parked mini-truck, in the yard of town slaughterhouse, i was really losing myself in the book while waiting my uncle minding his kurban business. i surely didnt mind the sultry weather that afternoon nor the mixture reek of prengus kambing and rancid fresh blood. in fact, it helped me understand what harry has been through during potion class with professor snape, you know, all that bezoar and nasty magical ingredients.

    when i've finally hit puberty, i started to notice guys in my surrounding, including the son of the bookshop owner; 4 or 5 years older than me, the typical chinese 'average joe' bro who occasionally got caught reading the latest issue of tony wong's archaic silat comics while helping his parents behind the cash register.

    i still cant get over the fact that this small yet important bookshop no longer exists.
